How to Extend PoE Beyond 100m (Extenders, CCTV Mode, Fiber)

The 100m Cat6 PoE limit is real, but three proven fixes beat it. Pick by distance.

1. PoE extender (midspan)

A midspan extender repeats power and data, adding up to ~100m per device. Simple for one distant camera off an existing run.

2. Long-range "CCTV mode" switch

Switches like the 16-port model have a long-range mode that pushes a single port to ~250m at reduced speed — ideal for perimeter and parking cameras.

3. Wireless or fiber for the long hauls

Over 250m or where trenching is impossible, use a 5.8GHz wireless bridge (up to 3km) or run fiber to a near-camera PoE switch, then short Cat6 to each camera.

Rule of thumb

Under 100m: standard PoE. 100–250m: long-range switch or extender. Beyond 250m / no trenching: wireless bridge or fiber.
