For IP/PoE cameras the cable carries both data and power, so the choice affects speed, distance and future-proofing. The good news: both Cat5e and Cat6 run PoE to 100m.

Cat5e — enough for most cameras

Cat5e handles 1 Gigabit to 100m, which is all a single 4K camera needs. It is cheaper and easier to terminate. For a typical install it is perfectly adequate.

Cat6 — headroom and cleaner runs

Cat6 supports 10 Gigabit over short runs and has tighter twist + thicker jackets, reducing crosstalk in bundles. For new builds, warehouses and any site you may upgrade, Cat6 is the smarter pull.

Does cable grade change PoE distance?

No — both deliver PoE to 100m. Past that you need long-range PoE, a wireless bridge or fiber.
