How you power a camera decides how you wire the whole run. The two common options are PoE (Power over Ethernet) and 12V DC.

PoE: one cable does both

A PoE camera gets data and power from a single Cat6 cable run to a PoE switch. One pull, no local power adapter, up to 100m. Ideal for new IP installs and clean ceilings.

12V DC: separate power

A 12V camera needs a power source at the camera — either a paired 18AWG line (often run as RG59 siamese for analog/coax) or a local PSU. More cables, but no switch port budget is consumed.

Only with a PoE splitter that steps the switch’s 48V down to 12V at the camera. Native PoE cameras take the 48V directly. If your camera is 12V-only, add a splitter or run 12V power.

Is PoE more reliable than 12V DC?

PoE centralises power at the switch (one UPS protects all cameras), while 12V spreads the failure points across many adapters. For new IP systems PoE is usually simpler and easier to back up.
