PoE Switch vs Injector: Which Powers Your Cameras?

Both a PoE switch and a PoE injector put power and data on one Ethernet cable — the difference is scale. Pick wrong and you either overspend or run out of ports.

A PoE switch powers many cameras

A PoE switch has several powered ports plus an uplink, so it powers and connects 4, 8, 16 or 24 cameras from a single box. This is the standard for any multi-camera system.

A PoE injector powers one port

A single-port injector adds 802.3at power to one ordinary switch or router port. Use it when you have just one PoE camera and a non-PoE switch, or to PoE-enable a single remote camera off an existing network.

How to decide

1 camera: one injector. 2–24 cameras: a PoE switch sized with one port per camera plus an uplink. Mixed: a switch with a couple of spare ports beats juggling injectors.

Budget the watts

Count ports × per-camera watts (15.4W af, 30W at) and add 20% headroom. The 4-port 802.3af switch suits light domes; the 8-port 802.3at covers PTZ and 4K.
