How to Install an Outdoor Security Camera: Step-by-Step
Mount under eaves, use a junction box, seal the cable, protect from surges, then aim and test. Six steps to a camera that survives weather.

A clean outdoor install is mostly about weatherproofing and aim. Follow these steps.
1. Pick the spot
Under an eave or soffit, looking down the approach at about 30°. Avoid direct sun and strong backlight. Confirm Wi-Fi/PoE reach first.
2. Mount
Use a wall bracket or a junction box so the cable exits through the box, not a raw hole in the wall. A box also hides connectors from rain.
3. Weatherproof the cable
Drop a cable gland where the lead enters the box, and a rain cover if exposed. Never leave a RJ45 joint outdoors unprotected.
4. Power
PoE cameras just need the Cat6. For a 12V bullet use a waterproof 12V supply indoors-fed, not an outdoor socket.
5. Surge protection
Add a 2-in-1 surge protector on long outdoor runs — lightning finds the longest conductor.
6. Aim and test
Preview the view on a phone, set the angle, then tweak IR or spotlight. Our IP rating guide explains how much weather your model tolerates.
Frequently asked
Can I install an outdoor camera myself?
Yes for a PoE or plug-in 12V camera at eave height. Use a junction box, seal the cable, and add surge protection. Hire a pro for roof heights or mains wiring.
How do I weatherproof the cable?
Run the lead into a junction box through a PG cable gland, and add a rain cover for exposed lenses. Keep every connector inside a protected box.
Are SurveilForge accessories compatible with Hikvision, Dahua and Axis cameras?
Yes — they follow open surveillance standards (IEEE 802.3af/at PoE, RJ45, BNC, DC 12V/24V) and work with any brand using those standards, including Hikvision, Dahua and Axis. SurveilForge is an independent brand, not affiliated with any camera OEM.
Can I buy a single unit, or only wholesale?
Standard products are sold as single units in our shop. Custom or OEM branding and volume pricing start at a minimum order of 300 pieces.
