More megapixels is not automatically better — it is better only when the extra detail lands where you need it.

What each tier covers

2MP (1080p): a doorway, a checkout, a short corridor. Enough for faces within a few metres.
4MP: a room, a driveway, a shop floor. The sweet spot for most installs — a 4MP bullet or turret.
8MP (4K): a yard, a car park, a long fence line where you must read a plate or face from far away — an 8MP turret.

The catch: storage and bandwidth

4K uses roughly double the bitrate of 2MP, so it needs more NVR disk and a stronger network. Use H.265 to halve that, and only put 4K where distance demands it. A storage calculator shows the TB impact.

Wide areas

For a single wide shot (lobby, yard), a panoramic camera or a PTZ beats stretching one 4K image thin.

Is 4K better than 1080p for security?

Only at distance. 4K lets you zoom into a face or plate across a yard; for a doorway, 1080p is enough and cheaper to store.

Does higher resolution use more storage?

Yes — roughly in proportion to pixel count. 4K needs about twice the disk of 2MP; H.265 codec roughly halves that.
